Velado V is a premium variety of Portuguese limestone, most commonly recognized as a high-quality selection of Cabeça Veada. It is characterized by its light-beige to off-white background and an exceptionally uniform, fine-grained texture. Features a consistent creamy-white or light-beige colour. It typically has a very clean background with minimal fossils or dark spots compared to standard grades, offering a “velvety” visual softness. Known for a plain, predictable structure with fine graining and low contrast, making it a popular modern alternative to the well-known Moleanos Fine limestone. Quarried in the Serra d’Aire and Candeeiros mountain range, specifically around the Alcanede and Santarém regions of Portugal.
Technical Properties
- Durability: While softer than granite, it is a dense sedimentary rock suitable for high-traffic areas if properly maintained.
- Porosity: It has a typical water absorption rate of approximately 1.7% to 4.1%. Because it is porous, sealing is recommended to prevent staining in kitchens or bathrooms.
- Strength: It possesses high compressive strength (approx. 95 MPa) and flexural strength (approx. 11.5 MPa), providing stability for large-scale architectural projects.
Common Applications
Due to its uniform shade and fine grain, Velado V is highly versatile for both residential and commercial use:
- Interior: Ideal for flooring, wall cladding, staircases, and fireplace surrounds.
- Exterior: Widely used for building facades and exterior wall cladding in both warm and cold climates due to its resistance to environmental factors.
- Ornamental: Frequently selected for custom stonework, including columns, balustrades, and bathroom vanities.
Popular Finishes
- Honed: A smooth, matte finish that highlights the stone’s natural colour without a glossy reflection.
- Polished: Enhances the colour depth and provides a sophisticated, reflective surface.
- Brushed/Bush-hammered: Adds texture and slip resistance, making it suitable for outdoor pathways or pool surrounds.
