Nero Marquina is an iconic Spanish marble, world-renowned for its deep, jet-black background and striking, high-contrast white veining. Often described as a “black bituminous limestone,” its rich colour is derived from naturally occurring bitumen. This marble is a staple in luxury design, valued for its graphic strength and timeless elegance.
Appearance and Physical Properties
  • Colour: A dense, intense black base providing a dramatic backdrop for its distinctive markings.
  • Veining: Features crisp white calcite veins that vary from delicate hairline streaks to bold, lightning-like patterns.
  • Origin: Exclusively quarried in the Markina region of the Basque Country in northern Spain.
  • Finish: It is most commonly seen in a polished finish to maximise its mirror-like lustre and depth. It is also available in honed (matte), brushedleathered, and tumbled finishes for a softer or more rustic appearance.
  • Durability: While it is a compact and durable stone, it is relatively soft (2.5–3 on the Mohs scale) and porous. It is sensitive to acidic substances, which can cause etching
