Azul Valverde is a renowned natural limestone primarily quarried in the Alcanede region of Portugal. It is celebrated for its sophisticated aesthetic, characterized by a deep blue-grey background with subtle variations of brown and green. It features a fairly uniform dark grey to blue-grey background. Some variations include “Azul Valverde Perlato,” which is darker with high fossil density, or “Amarelo Valverde,” a rare yellow-toned version. The stone typically has a thin to medium-grained structure. It contains small dark spots, irregular fine veins, and an abundance of fossils, such as shells and crinoids, which add organic depth to the surface. It is also commercially known as Azul Monica, Blue Lagos, Lagos Blue, or Gris Valverde.
Common Finishings
Azul Valverde is a versatile stone that can be finished in several ways to suit different design needs:
Polished: Enhances the brightness and highlights the dark blue/grey tones.
Honed: Provides a matte, silky surface without glare, often appearing slightly lighter in colour.
Brushed/Leathered: Creates a textured, slightly rustic feel while maintaining the original colour and providing a soft anti-slip surface.
Bush-Hammered & Flamed: Ideal for exterior use, these finishes create a rougher, corrugated texture that is highly slip-resistant.Applications Due to its aesthetic appeal and technical properties, it is used extensively in both residential and commercial projects:
Interiors: Frequently used for luxury flooring, wall cladding, bathroom design, fireplace surrounds, and kitchen countertops.
Exteriors: While used for building facades, paving, and pool copings, it is recommended to apply a high-quality sealant to protect against water absorption and freeze-thaw cycles
Available in large format slabs and in 30mm thickness.
