Sienna Gold

In stock

Sienna Gold marble—most famously known by its classical Italian name, Giallo Siena—is one of the world’s most prestigious and historically significant yellow marbles. Quarried in the Montagnola Senese hills near Sovicille, Tuscany, this material has been synonymous with opulence, wealth, and high religious art since Roman times.
Visual Appearance
  • Colour Palette: Features a deep, highly intense ochre-to-saffron yellow background caused by high concentrations of iron oxide minerals. This vivid golden canvas is broken up by patches of cream, light amber, and reddish-brown.
  • Veining & Patterning: The marble displays a network of fine, sub-parallel charcoal grey, dark purple, or chocolate brown veins. When it features broken, angular patches, it can cross into a rare Breccia Dorata structure.
  • Variability: It ranges from solid, nearly monochrome dark gold (the most highly prized) to lighter, heavily fractured variants featuring prominent white calcite clusters.
Geological Composition & Origins
  • Geology: A medium-grained metamorphic stone formed through intense subterranean heating. Its signature colouring stems from microcrystalline goethite and limonite naturally embedded in the limestone base.
  • Historic Prestige: This marble was favoured by historical architects for cathedrals and palaces, notably used throughout the historic centre of Siena and in the legendary Hôtel de Crillon lobby in Paris.
Physical Properties & Maintenance
  • Texture: Typically highly dense with a uniform structure, giving it an ultra-smooth feel.
  • Finishes: A polished finish is the definitive standard to fully pull out the glossy, glowing depth of the gold pigment. It can also be ordered in a honed (matte) finish for subtle, historical warmth.
  • Durability: Holds a standard marble hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale, meaning it scratches and etches easily in the presence of household acids like vinegar or citrus juice. It requires professional sealing to buffer against staining.
Best Applications
Sienna Gold is categorized as a high-impact luxury stone and is generally reserved for interior spaces where it acts as a centrepiece. Common architectural highlights include:
  • Grand Architecture: Monolithic columns, sweeping staircases, and ornate fireplace surrounds.
  • Luxury Inlays: Intricate floor medallion tiling and decorative wall cladding.
  • Statement Furniture: Premium dining tables, custom credenza tops, and high-end vanity surfaces.
