Brabuzon or also known as Ampilly (often spelled Amphilly) is a premium French limestone quarried in the northern Burgundy region, specifically near Ampilly-le-Sec in Côte-d’Or. It is highly regarded for its exceptional durability and its characteristic warm, “honeyed” aesthetic. Typically ranges from soft beige to warm honey-yellow, often with subtle grey or taupe undertones. It is a medium-grained, oolitic limestone. Depending on the “bench” (layer) from which it is quarried, it can be: Brabuzon Medium: More homogenous and lighter in color with “speckled” markings, or Brabuzon Tigré (Tiger): Features darker, parallel veins or “stripes” that add visual movement. The stone often contains delicate fossilized shells and unique mineral textures that deepen its historic character.
Technical Properties
Durability: Ampilly is classified as a semi-hard to hard stone (density of approx. 2360 kg/m³).
Resistance: It is exceptionally frost-resistant, making it one of the most reliable Burgundy stones for exterior use in cold climates.
Versatility: Its low water absorption (approx. 0.5%) allows it to be used in “wet” areas like bathrooms and pool surrounds.
Typical Applications
Flooring & Paving: Extensively used for both internal flagstones and external patios.
Architectural Features: Popular for carving into solid sinks, washbasins, steps, and massive pillars.
Heritage Projects: It has been used in prestigious global landmarks, including Charles de Gaulle Airport, the National Library in Paris, and the Cathedral of Troyes.
Common Finishes
Antique/Aged: The most popular choice, which gives the stone a timeworn patina similar to reclaimed medieval stone.
Honed or Rubbed: Provides a smoother, more contemporary surface while maintaining the stone’s natural warmth
